Early Morning Ride
As the weather gets colder, and it gets dark earlier in the day, I have shifting some of my rides to the early morning. On the evening of November 3rd I got ready for a ride the next morning. The more I prepare ahead of time, the less I have do early in the morning.

Recreational Rides
Each fall I commit to doing recreational rides during the winter months. Then it gets really cold and I find myself slacking off. My feet and hands get cold easily. I have electric mittens and warm boots, but after half an hour, when it is below 20 degrees my extremities get cold. This limits my range. When the temperature is in the single digits, getting ready for a ride takes almost half an hour! If I am taking a short ride for fun, it almost doesn't seem worth the effort.

June 12th Ride
On the evening of June 11th, I prepared for a ride up to Saint Albans from my house in Winooski. I checked the weather and saw that it was going to be cool in the morning and warmer later in the day. I use a checklist for long rides, so I consulted the list before preparing everything I would need. For the cooler part of the ride, I took out a long sleeve shirt, a windbreaker, and a pair of garden gloves. The garden gloves aren't very thick but warmer than fingerless bike gloves. I also set out a pair of bike shorts, socks, bike gloves, buff, hat, sunglasses, and a variety of snacks. I filled my water bottle and added some lemon juice, which makes the water more refreshing. I packed a map because I am unfamiliar with some of the roads in Georgia and Saint Albans.

Shelburne Bike Rack
In early May I took a ride south to Shelburne. I stopped outside the Pierson Library and locked my bike to the rack there. It is a fine-looking bike rack but it is designed so that with a U-lock you can only really attach either the front or rear wheel, which is not secure. It seems sad that someone spent so much time designing and building something with so little practical value.
