Safe Routes to School Resources

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a national movement to make it safer and easier for kids to walk, bike, and roll to school through better infrastructure, supportive policy, and hands-on education and encouragement. Local Motion works alongside the Vermont Agency of Transportation’s Safe Routes Program and the national Safe Routes Partnership, which sets the broader framework and shares resources used by SRTS programs across the country.

Local Motion helps lead SRTS work in Vermont by:

  • Advocating for and coordinating infrastructure improvements like crosswalks, sidewalks, bike lanes, and traffic calming specifically so kids can get to and from school safely.
  • Supporting events and education for students, families, and school staff that encourage kids to walk and bike to school.

Building a culture of walking and biking at your school can be done with a few key events, reusable resources, and a little organization. Quick links to the resources listed below:

Walking & Biking School Buses

Walking & Biking School Buses are groups of students who walk or bike to school together along a set route with adult supervision. These are best when the adult is a trusted parent, or a member of the school staff, and when they are hosted daily or weekly.
