Here is a more in-depth plan of action for once you have left the scene of the crash and dealt with the immediate steps.

  • Make sure to get examined for injuries right away. Adrenaline can make you feel fine even if you aren’t. There may also be internal injuries that you cannot feel or see. Either get checked by paramedics on scene or to go to a medical center after.
  • It is also important to make sure police on the scene correctly understand what happened. Some may misinterpret the accident or try to place blame on the cyclist. Tell them your experience with objective language. Do not try to place or accept blame for the events as it could make later insurance appeals more difficult. If possible, also make sure witnesses can back up your story.
  • Do not wait to receive medical attention after the incident. This can make it seem like your injuries were not serious and insurance will try to use this against you. It is also helpful to have a doctor advocate to insurance companies for you.
  • Also do not wait to find a lawyer to help you with the process. They will help you deal with insurance in order to get you the most you can. Trying to deal with it alone will lead to a headache.
  • A spreadsheet of all expenses related to the cost can be a good idea. Insurance will likely ask for receipts and keeping track of everything will help you down the road.
  • Do not immediately cooperate with insurance or before all of the facts are gathered. Also use your lawyer for advice.
