The League of American Bicyclists has recognized Local Motion with a Gold Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB) award, earning us a place alongside more than 1,100 businesses across the country contributing to the movement to build a more Bicycle Friendly America for everyone.
Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicycles, tells us that “when businesses support biking, they’re investing in healthier employees, more engaged customers, and stronger communities.” But what makes a business bicycle friendly? While there is no single answer, there are a lot of things that businesses can do to encourage biking, including:
Offer convenient, secure bike parking
Offer incentives to bicycle commuters
Foster a positive internal bike culture
Celebrate Bike to Work Day (or all of Bike Month!)
Set measurable goals to reduce barriers and increase bicycling rates
Local Motion proudly supports bicycling culture in our own workplace and we are working to make all of Vermont bicycle friendly. By applying to the Bicycle Friendly Business program, you are showing your community that your business supports active transportation. When more businesses take part, it becomes easier to choose biking as our community becomes connected.
Once your business completes an application, the League will decide your award level and provide helpful feedback on how to make your business more bicycle friendly. Take a look at our feedback for an example of how these reports can help. Even Local Motion has space to improve!
