Local Motion works with a range of partners across Vermont to get kids in grades K through 8 riding their bikes with style and confidence. Our trainings and camps all use a games-based curriculum developed by Local Motion and the Center for Health and Learning. Participants all have the opportunity to practice their cycling skills under the supervision of a trained instructor. Bikes and helmets are provided for the duration of the training to all children who need them.
SUMMER CAMPS AND TRAININGS
We work with municipal parks and recreation departments to offer bike skills camps and trainings as part of towns' summer camp schedule. These trainings range from one-time, three-hour intensive trainings to a week-long series of daily two-hour trainings as part of "general" summer camps to full-week bike adventure camps.
To learn about all our camps and how to register, visit our Summer Camps page.
EQUIPMENT LOAN PROGRAM
In addition to conducting trainings ourselves, we also loan our bike skills training equipment -- a secure trailer with 46 kids' bikes and all needed equipment -- to PE teachers and after-school programs at no cost (other than a nominal delivery fee). We work with our partners in schools to get them up to speed on our curriculum and help them plan out a series of trainings that fit their needs.
To learn more about the program and to request the Bike Smart trailer for your school, visit our Loaner Program page. Note that our bike trailer is fully reserved for spring 2012, but we will hold any additional requests for consideration in fall 2012 and beyond.
RESOURCES AND CURRICULA
Local Motion offers free copies of a booklet entitled "A Parent's Guide to Safe Bicycling Essentials" to schools, camps, afterschool programs, or any other organization that wants to distribute them. This 14-page guide covers everything a parent needs to know to help their child enjoy bicycling safely, from how to fit a helmet to how to navigate traffic.
To request printed copies of the Parent's Guide, please fill out this quick online form. You can also download a PDF version of the Parent's Guide here.
Local Motion has also developed a user-friendly curriculum guide for teaching bike skills in collaboration with the Center for Health and Learning. This is the curriculum that we use for our own trainings, and we provide every school that borrows our trailer with bound copies for their own use.
You can download an electronic copy of the Bike Smart On Bike curriculum here .
