Kohl's Kids Bike Smart is a regional bike skills initiative that works with a range of partners across Vermont to get kids in grades K through 8 riding their bikes with style and confidence. Kohl's Kids Bike Smart trainings and camps all use a games-based curriculum developed by Local Motion and the Center for Health and Learning.
Participants all have the opportunity to practice their cycling skills under the supervision of a trained instructor. Bikes and helmets are provided for the duration of the training to all children who need them.
Kohl's Kids Bike Smart is powered by Local Motion and supported by the Vermont Children's Hospital, with funding provided through the Kohl's Cares program. A huge THANK YOU to all the partners who make this initiative possible!
SUMMER CAMPS AND TRAININGS
Kohl's Kids Bike Smart works with municipal parks and recreation departments to offer bike skills camps and trainings as part of towns' summer camp schedule. These trainings range from one-time, three-hour intensive trainings to a week-long series of daily two-hour trainings as part of "general" summer camps to full-week bike adventure camps.
To learn about all our camps, visit our Summer Camps page.
If you are a summer camp, and want to request the trailer for a week of camp, go to our Summer Camp Kohl's Kids Bike Smart Request Form. We are fully scheduled for the summer until the week of 8/19. If you want the Bike Smart trailer for your camp, but needed it for an earlier week, the sooner you put in the request, the better. You can request the trailer for next summer here: 2014 Summer Camp Kohl's Kids Bike Smart Request Form
EQUIPMENT LOAN PROGRAM
In addition to conducting trainings directly, Kohl's Kids Bike Smart also loans bike skills training equipment -- a secure trailer with 45 kids' bikes and all needed equipment -- to PE teachers and after-school programs at no cost (other than a nominal delivery fee). Kohl's Kids Bike Smart works with partners in schools to get them up to speed on our curriculum and help them plan out a series of trainings that fit their needs.
To learn more about requesting the Kohl's Kids Bike Smart trailer for your school, visit our Loaner Program page.
For schools:
We have opened up requests for FALL and SPRING of the 2013-2014 school year. To sign up for next year, go to our Fall and Spring 2013-2014 Kohl's Kids Bike Smart Trailer Request form.
If you want to request the trailer for SPRING 2013, go to our Spring 2013 Kohl's Kids Bike Smart Trailer Request form. We now only have the last week of March available, and the week of April 22.
RESOURCES AND CURRICULA
Local Motion offers free copies of a booklet entitled "A Parent's Guide to Safe Bicycling Essentials" to schools, camps, afterschool programs, or any other organization that wants to distribute them. This 24-page guide covers everything a parent needs to know to help their child enjoy bicycling safely, from how to fit a helmet to how to navigate traffic.
To request printed copies of the Parent's Guide, please fill out this quick online form.
You can also download a PDF version of the Parent's Guide here.
Local Motion has also developed a user-friendly curriculum guide for teaching bike skills in collaboration with the Center for Health and Learning. This is the curriculum that we use for our own trainings, and we provide every school that borrows our trailer with bound copies for their own use.
You can download an electronic copy of the Bike Smart On Bike curriculum here .
Many thanks to the Vermont Children's Hospital and Kohl's Cares for supporting Kohl's Kids Bike Smart!
