Now Dr. Luria Loves His Ride to Work Because of the Road—Not in Spite of It

For some people, biking is a lifelong love affair.  This is certainly the case for Dr. Scott Luria of Williston, VT, a physician at UVM Medical Center. Summer and winter alike, it's rare that Dr. Luria misses a day of biking.  For the past 25 years, only extreme weather events have stopped him from biking from his home in Williston to work in Burlington.

Dr. Luria estimates he has commuted by bike more than 200,000 miles in his lifetime. He has never been in a crash.  He attributes his perfect safety record to his bright clothes and lights and his constant attention to his surroundings.  But with the new bike lanes on Williston Road—Dr. Luria's daily commuting route—his ride is much more relaxing than it used to be.

Dr. Luria's reasons for riding everyday are simple: a feeling of freedom, financial savings, avoiding traffic, and benefits to his health.  Though retirement is not far down the road, he shows no signs of slowing down.  When the day comes that the daily commute is no more, Dr. Luria plans to tour America and the world—by bike, of course!

Here is Dr. Luria's story, in his own words.  He shares his love of riding and his hope that more and more of his patients will start biking as bike lanes appear across Vermont.
