Support Walk-Bike Safety on Bay Road

We, the undersigned, encourage the Selectboard of the Town of Shelburne to seek every opportunity to accelerate improvements to bike/walk infrastructure along Bay Road. In particular, we urge the Town to identify and implement low-cost solutions that can be constructed in advance of the replacement of the bridge over the La Platte River.  Increasing numbers of Shelburne residents and visitors are traveling along Bay Road on foot or by bike, and safety improvements in the near term will benefit both these travelers as well as motorists using Bay Road.

I feel safer biking on the Route 7 shoulder than I do riding on Bay Road, I would appreciate any safety improvements that could be made.

Foot and bike traffic is only increasing along this road. With no shoulder to speak of I am concerned that we are prime for a bad accident and this discourages walking/biking particularly by our youth. Just getting to the Ti-Haul path, to get to town is a concern. Please do not give up on looking for workable options for Bay Road. Thank you.

I lived in Shelburne for ten years and my husband and I still own our home there, visiting often and planning to return in the not too distant future to retire in this wonderful community. I ride my bike for both fun and for as much purposeful transportation as I can, and as I continue to age, I plan to purchase an e-bike one day to help me continue to get exercise and run errands with low impact to the environment. I urge the select board to continue to make Shelburne a safe and convenient place to ride bikes and to walk, which helps make Shelburne a great place to live and to visit and not simply a place to drive through. Bay Road is a community treasure as it provides access to Shelburne Farms, beautiful walking trails and places to bicycle, and the boat launch, not just for Bay Road residents, but for all of us who live in Shelburne. Let’s support our active Shelburnites in their desire to walk and bike – to stay healthy, reduce traffic congestion and enjoy the lovely scenery.

We could start by building a path from the boat access to Bay Park. This would make it much safer for bikers who are traveling south to turn left onto the Ty Haul path.

I often run on Bay Road (+/- baby Jogger). There is no doubt improvements are needed to enhance safety. I am also a biker as well and don’t see how adding a sidewalk will have any negative impact. Let’s use common sense and agree on a reasonable plan to enhance everyone’s safety.

I love that Bay Road has retained its charm as a narrow country road, but I think it’s gotten too dangerous for anyone NOT in a car, especially pedestrians and young children on bikes. Enhancing safety for pedestrians will vastly improve quality of life for residents who live on the road and in the surrounding neighborhoods. To maintain the special character of the area, we should pursue change carefully . Fortunately, there are many commonsense and low- cost interventions we can pursue that are contextually appropriate and honor the local setting. Let’s expand our network of sidewalks and paths as we have done elsewhere in Shelburne, thoughtfully and incrementally.

Strongly support changes. Bridge is too narrow for traffic that often includes wide boat trailers. This is also true for rail bridge.

Yes please! Would love if we could bike with the kids to school or walk to Shelburne Bay Park instead of driving . Currently neither are an option for safety reasons.

Would love to see a path from Shelburne Farms to Bay Park and/or Ti Haul Path! This could happen before the bridge is replaced!

absolutely keep it simple——white lines pulling traffic in. Start there!
