South Burlington Rec Path

Town: South Burlington

Uses: Inline Skating Paved Biking Walking

Description:

Biking this trail can be quite surprising. One moment you're passing under the freeway, the next you're cycling with fields of ripe corn on one side and dark forest on the other. You're lost in the suburbs, and suddenly you emerge onto a street that leads to a tiny park with a spectacular view of Lake Champlain (Overlook Park on Spear St.). It is surely worth exploring!

This path provides lots of alternatives to for getting from here to there thoughout the city.

The entire trail is illustrated on the Burlington Bike Map, published by the Burlington Bicycle Council - get it free from Local Motion or at Burlington's Department of Public Works!

I actually used the site to help find the best way to ride from one meeting in downtown Burlington to the next meeting at Kennedy Dr. and Hinesburg Rd. The Trail Finder showed me the facilities available and helped me plan a really easy, comfortable way to make the trip. Great tool!

I used this site to help me find a good route to bike to work on Kimball Ave in South Burlington from Shelburne. Getting on the Rec Path between Dorset and Route 116 was such a better alternative from riding on Route 116 from Cheesefactory Road.

I ride this every day. Where is the moose picture that I took under the I189 overpass on Farrell Street?

David: You're right, we should show this quadruped utilizing the rec path network. Here it is in its multi-modal splendor.

Thanks, Todd. This is the prize I got in the box with my first camera cell phone. It was on my early morning commute to work. Notice that the moose is correctly walking against traffic.

I use these trails quite a bit. One of my favorite shortcuts is the Northernmost section of this trail between Farrell Street and Spear Street. This section shaves off the steep hills most other routes require. Is it possible to access the Burlington Bike Map online?

The recent paving of South Burlington's bike paths is really a great improvement. However, on Dorset Street just south of the 189 underpass and the chainlink fence on the east side of the road there is a condition that I believe is hazardous to bikers. There is a very large edge to the new bike macadam on the road side. This is an area where bike riders often switch from the road to bike path. If not with accomplished with good skill and awareness there will definitely be a fall. Likewise going from the path to the road could drop a bike onto the highway.
