Frequently Asked Questions

Can I print these maps?

Having a virtual map doesn't always help when you're on the trail. Why not print a copy and take it with you?

Currently, map printing is not supported in all browsers. Internet Explorer and Safari users will have no trouble, however Firefox users will not be able to print the trail lines. This feature should be available in the future, but for now, Firefox users can simply revert to Internet Explorer when they need to print.

As always, be sure to use Print Preview before printing to make sure the map and description will print properly. You may only need to print the first page to get the map and directions to the trailhead. We recommend printing double-sided to conserve paper.

Printed Publications Available: In many cases, a formal print publication has been made by the trail manager. If available, we have linked to these PDF's in the trail description or given directions on where to pick up a copy. These are often formatted better for the printed page and contain valuable information from the managing entity. Before you print from our site, look for these publications.

Can I download this trail data?

Yes, you can! All the data that our volunteers have diligently collected is part of the public domain. That means that individuals, organizations, and municipalities may download and utilize this data for free. Whether you are planning your next hiking adventure or surveying for a sidewalk project in your town, the data is yours! The Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission has archived this GIS data as part of this project and it is presented here in an easy to download format.

Each trail has a set of files that can be downloaded by clicking the "Download" button located at the top right of each page, just below the Local Motion logo. The files are in KML format which can be viewed with Google Earth. Google Earth software is available for free and may be downloaded here.

Can I put these maps on my GPS unit?

Yes. You'll need to start by downloading the trail data for the trail you're interested in. See the question about downloading above to obtain the KML files. If you need another file format, for instance for your GPS unit or other mapping software, KML can be readily converted to other common formats. There is a great piece of software, called GPSBabel, that will do this for you. GPSBabel may be downloaded for free here. Feel free to request file conversion from our staff by emailing trails@localmotion.org. Please specify the trail(s) that you are interested in and which file format you need.
