Speak up for More Stripes on Streets

We, the undersigned, call on the City of Burlington to work with Local Motion and other partners to install new bike lanes on at least two major streets that:

a) are important connections for biking; and
b) can have bike lanes added without significant changes to vehicle lanes and without any major construction.

We urge the City to add bike lanes to these streets by fall 2016.  We encourage the City to take a "light and fast" approach to adding bike lanes, restriping streets based on in-house engineering knowledge rather than hiring an outside firm to do the design work.

Finally, we call on Mayor Weinberger to allocate the funds needed to pay for extra line grinding and striping costs incurred to create these bike lanes, and to work with city staff to expedite these projects.

We need more stripes, but really, we need protected bike lanes.

Bicycles (along with wheelbarrows) are the best labor-saving devices. More stripes – fewer reasons not to be using them.

I see expanded and enhanced bike lanes as a way to strengthen small business in the Old North End by providing a safer and more enjoyable means of reaching the businesses located here.

I have previously lived in The Netherlands where, if I wanted, I could bicycle from one end of the country to the other without experiencing any feeling of danger due to vehicular traffic (and without a helmet!). We need protected bicycle lanes in Burlington. Turning a gutter into a bicycle lane by painting a bicycle on it is not appropriate. Without proper infrastructure we are preventing much of the population from experiencing this healthy and fun mode of transportation. Not only do adults need to be safe while cycling to work but also children and teens who should be able to bicycle safely to school. We need more infrastructure!

At dangerous intersections place traffic lights for cyclists. They can press a button similarly to pedestrians and when their light is green they can traverse the intersection while vehicles are stopped. It shouldn’t be difficult to make cycling safe. Make the Burlington area a model for other cities in the Northeastern States.
