If you are interested in taking a more hands on approach to cycling advocacy, the following ten steps are ways for you to make a difference on the University of Vermont campus.

1. Form a working group with your friends to implement bicycle safety education projects on campus. The UVM Cycling Team is a great place to look for people with bicycle-minded interests.
2. Write your thesis about bicycle advocacy on college campuses and take a detailed census of the number of cyclists on our campus.  You can then use this information to suggest changes to the current bike-pedestrian network on campus.
3. Burlington is chockfull of great organizations that keep bicycle advocacy on the forefront of discussion. Contact the Chittenden County Metropolitan Planning Organization or other local bicycle planners for information about bicycle planning and education efforts in your area. 4. Work with UVM's Transportation and Parking Services to distribute information about sharing the road safely with bicyclists.  Here is an idea: In order to receive a parking permit on campus, drivers need to pass a mandatory written exam about bicycle safety.  Work with TPS on this one...the possibilities are endless.
5. Similar to this website, create a Bicycle Resource Map for campus that outlines new and improved cycling routes.  Be sure to also include stealthy messages about some simple rules for safe bicycling.  Remember, as college students we do not like being told what to do.  The simpler and subtler, the better.
6. Visit the local Burlington bicycle shops and talk with them about ways to work together to promote the use of lights, helmets, and other safety equipment.  Check out this link to see the bicycle shops near campus!
7. Work with the UVM Police Department to offer a basic bicycle safety course at the beginning of each semester.  Remember, it never hurts to be on the right side of the law!
8. Get the message out in UVM's student run newspapers, the Cynic and the Water Tower!  Give them a good story to write about the basic rules of bicycling and offer to help them set up a fun photo shoot of riding through campus. 
9. Be creative! Use a simple, yet encouraging event to begin to communicate the importance of helmets on campus. Tulane University encourages helmet usage by providing free donuts to those who ride with their helmet on!  Think of your own fun way to get people interested about wearing their helmet.  As a college student, free food is usually a safe bet to lure people in.
10. Take the Campus Planning Services employees on a bicycle tour of the UVM campus.  Offer to help identify a system of safe bicycle routes on campus and make the necessary improvements.
