Often times, good bicycle and pedestrian facilities are often thrown by the wayside in favor of automobile centered infrastructure. At construction and road building sites the pedestrian is often treated like a second class citizen when compared to motorists. Special rights should be afforded to those who choose to use alternative modes of transportation such as bicycling. Here is a sample Bill of Rights for cyclists that could easily be implemented into the campus legislation. Take action and know your rights as a cyclist on the University of Vermont campus!
- The right of campus bicyclists to safely use university paths and routes at night thanks to adequate lighting, police presence, and emergency phone systems.
- The right of campus bicyclists to be able to cross streets at safe signals in an appropriate amount of time.
- The right of campus bicyclists to have the right-of-way at all pedestrian crossings and that they be strictly enforced by the UVM Police Department.
- The right of campus bicyclists to be safe from ice, snow, deep water, and broken pavement as they use these thoroughfares.
- The right of campus bicyclists to have safe and convenient covered storage areas to protect their bicycles from the elements.
- The right of campus bicyclists not to be impeded by vegetation or structural barriers on University paths.
- The right of campus bicyclists to be safe and well separated from main roadways by splash guards, protective fencing, or vegetative barriers.
- The right of campus bicyclists to know where retail bicycle shops exist, what buses accept bicycles on board, and other facility information with the use of signs and maps.
- The right of campus bicyclists to have a pleasant riding experience, free of fear from automobiles and other motorized vehicles.
- The right of campus bicyclists to have a peace of mind while riding!
**If any of these criteria are not being met, feel free to contact the UVM Police Department or the Campus Planning Services to help remedy these issues and make UVM the best college campus to ride your bike on!** |
