25 Attend Outreach Meeting for VT Bike/Pedestrian Economic Impact Study

Working_Paper_1_Cover

FEBRUARY 2011: The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) hosted a statewide meeting February 16, 2011 via Vermont Interactive Television to gather early input on a study that will estimate the economic benefits of walking and biking in Vermont.  The purpose of the first public meeting was to increase awareness about the study and its goals and to gather early input on the approach and factors that should be considered.  25 people attended and provided valuable input on the project.

The study is being conducted for VTrans by a consultant team led by Resource Systems Group, Inc in partnership with Economic and Policy Resources, Inc and Local Motion. A presentation will be provided by the consultant team that describes their approach to the study, sources of information, and shares some preliminary findings. The presentation will be followed by a facilitated discussion to answer questions, gather feedback on the approach and potentially seek assistance with providing additional information.

Study Overview

The purpose of this study is to estimate the total economic benefits of walking and biking in Vermont. The results will be used to help educate decision makers, the business community, planners, advocates and other stakeholders; and may suggest policy changes and other actions that should be pursued to further the economic and other benefits of these two active modes of transportation. Previous studies have focused on the economic contribution of shared use paths to the tourism industry. This study will include a more comprehensive estimate and will evaluate such factors as: jobs and income created through investments in walking and biking related infrastructure, retail businesses and manufacturing facilities; reduced out-of-pocket costs when travelling by foot or bike; and the economic benefits associated with cleaner air, less noise, and healthier lifestyles that are the natural byproducts of walking and biking.
