Safe Routes to School Sponsors

22 elementary schools are participating in Safe Routes To School in Chittenden County during the 2000-2010 school year. The program seeks to get more children walking and bicycling to school more often. Five decades ago, 70% of children across the country walked or biked to school. Today, about 13% walk or bike.

Thanks to increased interest and funding, Local Motion is working with a record number of residents to provide WalkSmart & BikeSmart classes, coordinate walking school buses, and plan for traffic safety improvements. Together, we can help our children be healthier, safer, and more independent.

Vermont Safe Routes To School is overseen by the Vermont Agency of Transportation. Local Motion coordinates the effort in Chittenden County in partnership with the Chittenden County Metropolitan Planning Organization and local schools. We need your help!
