Lenny and Angela Get Edmunds Kids Walking!

What a success!  One-third of all children at Edmunds school were walking, biking or scootering to school every day during the 2010 Way To School Challenge.

'It's important that we walk and bike as much as possible" Edmunds Elementary Prinipal Paul Schreiber told the kids the final morning.  How did all this momemtum at the school occur?  Here are two of the reasons:

Lenny The Crossing Guard

He believes so strongly in getting kids walking and bicycling to school, that Lenny Bertiaume gave every kid $1 on their way to school on the first day of "Way To Go" week!  The kids love him and the parents trust him.  "Lenny offers the kids treats on Hallooween and Christmas too," remarks parent Brian Perkins.  Local Motion salutes Lenny and the other crossing guards who make walking and biking to school safe and fun.

Angela the Wonder Parent

Every school benefits from active parents, but Angela Smith takes it to the next level.  She helped continue Walk To School activities at the school, even as Local Motion's Safe Routes team shifted our attention to other deserving schools in the region.  Her energy is infectious and her organizational abilities are top notch.  The "Way To Go" week ended with a parade attended by the Mayor, the UVM basketball team, two mascots and other community leaders.  Food and free stickers awaited the kids when they got to school.

Well done Lenny, Angela and the Edmunds Elementary students!

Upcoming Safe Routes Events

Winooski I Heart to Walk Parade

Safe Routes to Schools events happen even in the wintertime. Here, kids, parents and all the JFK Elementary school teachers set out on February 11th, 2009 for a parade to celebrate walking. The Red Cross Blood drop was the "secret" mascot. Participants enjoyed a free community breakfast afterwards.

Kids Walking & Biking More at 22 Schools!

Safe Routes to School

22 elementary schools are participating in Safe Routes To School in Chittenden County during the 2000-2010 school year.  The program seeks to get more children walking and bicycling to school more often. Five decades ago, 70% of children across the country walked or biked to school. Today, about 13% walk or bike.
