Youth Training
Earn-A-Bike!

earn-a-bike-deepan-xsmOur Earn-A-Bike! program is an opportunity for youth ages 8 to 18 to trade 10 hours of their time in the shop in exchange for a bicycle that they refurbish.

Youth receive instruction in bike repair from trained Bike Recycle Vermont mechanics, and spend their time refurbishing bicycles for low-income Vermonters. With our help and encouragement, they turn the bikes into smooth-running, road-worthy machines. Upon completing the program, which includes a test of their bicycle knowledge, each participant may select a bike of their own to refurbish and ultimately take home!

For more information, call Dan or Mark at the shop, 802-264-9687.

Bike Recycle Vermont offers learning opportunities for school / youth groups that combine hands-on learning with reflection.  Students get a chance to demonstrate their mastery of bike mechanics while they help to rebuild bicycles for low-income Vermonters.  We tailor Bike Clinics to various age groups (10-18 year olds).  Our 5 stands accommodate up to 15 students.

To schedule a Bike Clinic for your class or youth group, call Mark Rowell at 802-264-9687.

Testimonials

"After school, I like to come to Bike Recycle because everywhere else is boring in comparison."

- Brian Nguyen, Edmunds Middle School

Centerpoint School's students typically require and benefit from hands-on learning opportunities through positive community connections.  Bike Recycle Vermont has offered our students practical skills that can lead to successful future employment and has provided the natural mentoring relationships that allow students with a range of challenges…to experience success in their daily living, setting the stage for ongoing success in their lives.”

- Mitchell Barron, Executive Director, Centerpoint Adolescence Treatment Services

“Today I adjusted brakes and derailleurs. I replaced a rear derailleur with Don (a retired volunteer). This is the third time I've worked with Don and he's a great teacher. I like coming here because I like to learn new things.  Everybody is helpful around here.”

- Dustin, Colchester, age 13

“I like coming to Bike Recycle because I learn new things every time and I meet new people too. Today I worked with Molly (Senior at Champlain College) and I really enjoyed working with her.”

- Dakota, Colchester, age 13

"I know a whole lot of people who have bicycles who would not have them unless they got them from this place."

- Hasan Williams, Burlington, age 13

Bike Recycle Vermont effort has provided over 375 bicycles to resettled refugee and immigrant families since 2004. We appreciate that BRV also teaches refugees how to fix their bike so that a flat tire or other issue won’t stop them.  We understand our clients occasionally come back to volunteer at BRV.  Young refugees also enroll in BRV’s Earn-A-Bike class where kids build their own bike in exchange for volunteering and learning bike mechanic skills.

- Judy Scott, Executive Director, Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program

A learner from Essex has chosen to work with BRV as part of his project based learning experience.  He has become so energized and excited by his work there that he has begun to explore the possibilities of opening a smaller bike repair shop within his school.  Through his work at BRV he is able to work with his hands while learning essential skills in an area he is passionate about causing him to be one of the most motivated learners at his school.

- Elizabeth Ploof, Edge Academy, Essex

Bike Recycle Vermont gives my students an opportunity to engage in a meaningful learning project that interests them on a level that directly connects to one of their own hobbies(biking).  They are provided with a learning opportunity that provides them with knowledge that they can immediately apply to their own world.  The hands on approach adds to the connection that they make with the work and their world.  It also provides them with a healthy escape from their normally chaotic lives.
- Mark Zizis, Behavoir Specialist, AD Lawton School, Essex
