INTERVALE CENTER PRESS RELEASE:
WINTERVALE IS COMING!

Burlington, VT - This winter, the Intervale Center, a Burlington-based nonprofit that strengthens community food systems, and Local Motion, a dynamic nonprofit that helps makes Vermont a better place to walk, bike, run, and cross-country ski, are partnering with other area nonprofits to bring free cross-country skiing and "Wintervale Days" to Burlington's Intervale.
Started as a grassroots effort by three people in 2008, Wintervale now enters its fourth year as a vibrant, volunteer-driven, collaborative event. It features three miles of cross-country ski trails - donated by the Intervale Center and Intervale farms - and is stewarded by Local Motion's 16 volunteer groomers and two volunteer mechanics. An estimated 3,000 users visited Intervale cross-country ski trails during the 2010-2011 season. This season's premier sponsor is MVP Healthcare.
Wintervale Days are family-friendly, outdoor winter festivals that celebrate the Intervale's recreational and educational opportunities. They will take place on Sunday, February 5 (postponed due to lack of snow) and March 11, 2012 from 10 am - 2 pm in the Intervale at 128 Intervale Road, Burlington, VT (former site of Intervale Compost). Please note: the January 15 date has been cancelled due to lack of forecasted snow.
Scheduled activities include free ski and snowshoe rentals provided by Skirack and Catamount Trail Association; cross-country ski clinics; kids' races and relays coordinated by RunVermont; winter tree ID and wildlife walks with the Intervale Center's Consevation Nursery, and educational food activities from City Market. Local hot chocolate from Lake Champlain Chocolates and snacks from local vendors will be available for purchase, and a percentage of profits will be donated back to the Intervale Center and Local Motion. Wintervale Days are free of charge and open to the public. Donations to support trail maintenance and event support are welcome.
"We're excited for the opportunity to share the Intervale's amazing year-round recreational and educational opportunities with our community," said Travis Marcotte, executive director of the Intervale Center. "Wintervale is a great annual event, and we are grateful to Local Motion and our other partners for helping make it happen."
Says Local Motion's executive director, Chapin Spencer, "It wouldn't happen without all the partners and volunteers who understand the importance of providing affordable wintertime fun to area residents."
