'Day Of Service' A Big Hit In Burlington
BURLINGTON, Vt. -- For some, Monday was a day off from work. Juliet Moran chose to spend it with her husband and kids, scrubbing filthy car interiors, even the floors at a local nonprofit organization called the Good News Garage.
"I think it's a great way to work with our children and do our part in the community," Moran said, as her two boys, ages 6 and 7 pushed a squeegee across the floor. "It's something we're really proud to participate in."
At City Hall, at least 200 showed up at midday, to sign up for an assignment. Options ranged from making greeting cards for servicemen and women overseas, to interior painting, and cleaning toys and furniture at local day care and pre schools.
"The volunteers come in with so much energy and are just so focused on the task at hand," marveled Karen Prosciak, director of the Winooski Family Center. Two volunteers had just knocked off a nagging hallway painting job in under an hour. "We got a lot of stuff done and it's greatly appreciated."
It wasn't glamorous work, to be sure, but Nikkiah Atwood, 7of Burlington said she didn't mind. She spent the day with her Mom, washing toys and desks at her school. When asked who Dr. Martin Luther King was, she shook her head.
"We happen to live in a community that is amazingly civically active," said Andrew Graham, an Americorps organizers at City Hall. "We really benefit from people coming out to volunteer."
The 10th annual day of service event included a community dinner and evening entertainment at City Hall.
