RUTLAND HERALD
Rutland police on Tuesday identified a Connecticut woman who was killed when she was struck by a car on South Main Street, but the name of the youth behind the wheel of the car continues to be withheld.
Nancee L. Gell, 54, of Norwalk, Conn., died shortly after she was stuck in front of the Economy Inn, just after 8 p.m. Sunday.
Gell was visiting Vermont and attempting to cross the four-lane street when she was struck by a 2001 Subaru Legacy operated by a 16-year-old, police Detective Sam Delpha said in a statement released Tuesday.
Asked Tuesday about the identity of the driver, Detective Sgt. Kevin Stevens said police would not release the name until the case has been reviewed by Rutland County State’s Attorney Marc Brierre.
While a police sergeant said Monday the incident didn’t appear to represent anything more than a “tragic event,” Stevens said Tuesday the state’s attorney would make a final determination.
Asked about his review of the incident, Brierre said he received the case Tuesday morning but hadn’t looked at it yet. He said he didn’t have a timetable for determining whether any criminal charges are warranted.
Delpha said Tuesday police had ruled out alcohol as a factor in the crash and he said speed did not appear to have contributed to the incident either.
Rain and limited visibility did play a role, he said, as did the dark clothing Gell was wearing.
