A popular pedestrian bridge over the Winooski River in Montpelier was shut down because of safety concerns.

City officials say it's no longer safe to walk on the bridge that connects US Route 2 with State Street.

Officials told WCAX-TV the underside of the bridge is corroded and in need of repairs.

The bridge was built in 1998 at a cost of $250,000 and was expected to last 30 to 40 years.
