Safe Streets Collaborative

What is the Safe Streets Collaborative?

SSC_logo_only_lowThe Safe Streets Collaborative is a broad-based campaign by nonprofits and local governments from across Chittenden County, with leadership from Local Motion.  Our goal is to reduce crashes and injuries for people on foot and on bike by building a culture of respect on our streets and sidewalks. Our philosophy is that everyone has a part to play -- cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists alike -- in making our roadways safer for people on foot and on bike.

Over the course of 2012, the Safe Streets Collaborative pursued a variety of initiatives with local Safe Streets teams across the region, including:

  • Pedestrian safety presentations and reflective vests for seniors
  • A "Street and Sidewalk Safety Inventory" initiative to document safety issues affecting bicyclists and pedestrians and work with municipalities to get them fixed
  • Campus outreach to inprove safety for pedestrians, bike riders, and drivers alike, with a focus on bike and skateboard helmet use
  • Education about local policy changes -- such as "slow streets" speed limits -- that make cities and villages safer for everyone
  • Helmet distribution at Burlington events
  • Helmet decoration events--children who decorate their helmets are more likely to wear them.
  • Radio ads, public service announcements, and more

Funding for the Safe Streets Collaborative is generously provided by the Vermont Governor's Highway Safety Program. Scroll down for some quick links to help you get the information you need.
