Local Motion Offers Bike Skills Equipment Loaner Program for Schools

Van_edited2_1Thanks to a generous sponsorship from MVP Health Care and support from the Vermont Children's Hospital's Kohl's Cares ProgramLocal Motion offers Vermont  schools FREE use of a trailer full of kids' bikes plus equipment for conducting on-bike skills trainings. The trailer includes everything you need to teach bike skills to kids in grades 3 through 8.

Click here to fill out our request form for reserving the trailer and bikes.

The trailer is fully booked fo the spring 2012 season.  Please register your interest today for the fall 2012 season by clicking the link above.  We will begin scheduling for next fall in late spring 2012.

Thanks to Kohls_Cares_logo for supporting the school loaner program!

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Starting in spring 2012, schools must have someone on staff trained in the Bike Smart On Bike curriculum in order to be eligible to request the trailer and bikes.

We are instituting this requirement because, starting in 2012, we plan to use volunteer drivers to deliver the trailer.  We can only use volunteers, though, if no trainer training is needed at the school where the trailer is being delivered -- that is, if the driver can just drop the trailer off and go home. Separating training from delivery will therefore reduce our program costs considerably, allowing us to reach more schools with the funds available.

There are no remaining training opportunities this fall.  Check back for spring training opportunities in the new year. NOTE:  the Safe Routes to School workshops listed here previously have been postponed by VTrans until next spring.

For more details on how we prioritize eligible schools, please see the notes below.

Here is what the Bike Smart equipment loaner program includes:

  • A secure, weatherproof 16-foot cargo van with 46 high-quality Raleigh kids' bikes in various sizes
  • All needed equipment and supplies for conducting bike skills trainings, including helmets, traffic cones, spray chalk, and more
  • A clear and concise curriculum guide that divides the training into modules that instructors can mix and match to fit their needs

We will deliver the trailer to a school and leave it there for one to two weeks (depending on trailer availability and number of kids to be trained. Our staff are available to troubleshoot and answer questions by phone throughout the program. When all trainings had been completed, we will take the trailer to the next school.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • In order to keep our costs down for this program, we charge a nominal fee to help cover fuel costs for travel beyond Chittenden County. Rates are as follows:
    • Addison, Washington, Lamoille, Franklin, and Grand Isle counties:  $50 per pick-up/drop-off
    • Rutland, Windsor, Orange, Caledonia, and Orleans counties:  $75 per  pick-up/drop-off
    • Bennington, Windham, and Essex counties:  $100 per pick-up/drop-off
  • We encourage schools to submit coordinated requests with nearby schools so as to allow the trailer to stay in a given region for several weeks. If schools can make suitable arrangements to have the trailer moved from one school to the next, the delivery and pick-up fees can be split across schools
  • We prioritize schools that make efficient and comprehensive use of their time with the trailer. For example, a school that incorporates bike skills training into all PE classes, makes it the focus of the afterschool program, and organizes a bike festival or ride at the end of the week will get higher priority than a school that simply does a PE unit on bike skills.
  • We reach out actively to schools serving disproportionate numbers of students from low- and moderate-income families and encourage such schools to apply. Delivery fees are waived for schools with 50% or more of their population eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.
