Friday night’s Christmas tree bonfire was the biggest yet – over 30′ high! The chili cook-off on the North Hero House pier was great, too. Saturday was a busy day on the groomed 1k skating oval and hockey rink. Ironically, the sled dog rides were cancelled because of the great ice conditions – the dogs, and the sled, need snow. Sunday started out wicked cold and windy (-15 wind-chill), making the ice golf challenging, but that’s the whole point, right? Playing speed golf with my ice bike as my cart kept me warm. I especially liked the 790-yard 8th hole. The afternoon “warmed” up to 10 degrees, the wind dropped, and the sun came out for the free Nordic skate demos. Over 100 people came to enjoy the largest groomed track on Lake Champlain.
Don’t let this week’s warm weather fool you, there’s a solid 11” of ice on the bay for this weekend’s Frozen Chosen race, Saturday from 1-3. Be the fastest biker or skater around the course and win a new mountain bike from Earl’s! The free kid’s fishing derby is always a hit with trophys and food for the kids. Unfortunately, due to ice conditions, Sunday’s trek to Knight Island has been cancelled. See the full schedule at www.localmotion.org/greatice.
