PARK(ing) Day in Burlington!

What is PARK(ing) Day? It’s an annual, worldwide event that inspires city dwellers everywhere to transform metered parking spots into temporary parks for the public good. Members of the Burlington Bike Coalition, the Burlington Walk/Bike Council, and others created six parks (in six parking spaces!) on Main St. in Burlington on Friday. They did free bicycle repairs, had a tea party, played guitar, had an advice booth, made pedal-powered smoothies and relaxed in an outdoor living room. On College St., 105.9 WOMM-LP The Radiator broadcast a radio show from a parking space.
It was thought provoking for me to consider – rather than take for granted – how much space we dedicate to the support of cars, and to think about some of the choices we make for how we use our land. In Burlington, downtown is supported by people who come to shop and eat whether they come on foot, or by bike, bus or car. We need to include all modes of getting around!
