Author David Herlihy spun a riveting story about Frank Lenz‘s attempted 1892 bicycle trip around the world at Fletcher Free Library tonight.

80 cyclists packed the Fletcher Room to hear about this Pittsburgh man’s attempt to pedal his “safety bicycle” 20,000 miles across some of the most remote areas of the world over a century ago.  Despite his mother’s pleadings, Mr. Lenz embarked on this ambitious adventure…never to return.  Lenz, a writer and photographer, captured a unique view of the world in the late 19th century before vanishing in Turkey.

Mr. Herlihy’s presentation was recorded by RETN and will be online in the coming weeks.  The event was co-sponsored by the Old Spokes Home, Local Motion and the Fletcher Free Library.

After the presentation, many folks joined author David Herlihy at Stone Soup for a post event party (Chapin Spencer left, David Herlihey center, Glenn Eames right).   A birthday cake was brought out to celebrate the birthday of Old Spokes Home‘s founder Glenn Eames.  Happy Birthday Glenn!
