Over 200 people gathered at Burlington's Intervale Center on Sunday, September 22 to celebrate Local Motion and honor Chapin Spencer. Local Motion's founder and executive director stepped down in August to become Director of Public Works for the City of Burlington. It was a heck of a party, with music from Brett Hughes, food and beer from vendors American Flatbread, The Lazy Farmer and Southern Smoke.
Best of all, photographer Ben Sarle was on hand to take portraits of fans of Chapin and supporters of Local Motion with chalkboard messages about what they like best about the organization and its founder. We've shared a selection of the photos above. Watch for more in the weeks to come.
There were games and facepainting for children of all ages. Many attendees cycled to the event, filling the Secure Bike Parking bike racks.
Speakers included Peter Zamore, President of Local Motion’s Board; Brian Costello, a co-founder of Local Motion; Ron Manganiello, founder of Bike Recycle Vermont; Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger, and Local Motion’s current Interim Co-Executive Director, Jason Van Driesche. Chapin spent a few minutes on stage and inspired the crowd to sustain the movement for safer streets, human-powered transportation alternatives and promotion of physical activity to fight obesity.
