  • Building A Bikeable Burlington: A Bike Ride and Public Conversation

    IMPORTANT UPDATES:

    • AARP Vermont and the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce have gotten onboard as cosponsors of this event!  They both know that making Burlington a more bike-friendly city is good for people of all ages, good for the economy, and more.
    • We'll be raffling off a $100 Skirack gift certificate at the event!  You get one chance if you go on the ride, and another chance if you come to the meeting.  Pull out your bike and RSVP now using the form below!

Local Motion has been sounding the call for rapid improvements to Burlington's on-street biking network for well over a year now.  In 2017, Burlington DPW promised to step up the pace.  They queued up a whole lot of improvements to the on-street bike network.  But only one of them—the Union Street protected lane—actually got done.  The pace of progress is still far too timid and halting.

SCROLL DOWN TO RSVP FOR THIS IMPORTANT EVENT.

2018_BTV_bike_network.jpgWhat happened?  And how do we change things in 2018?  This is your chance to find out—and to speak up.  We'll ride on portions of the proposed network above, then head inside for a conversation about both goals and process with DPW Director Chapin Spencer and Parks & Rec Director Cindi Wright.  What projects should happen next year?  And what needs to change with DPW's process so they actually get done?  Share your thoughts and frustrations, and get answers to your questions about how the City will move things forward.

BIKE RIDE DETAILS:  Bike ride starts at 3 PM at Local Motion's office
Bring your own bike and helmet, plus a lock.  Ride will be on city streets across downtown.

MEETING DETAILS:  Conversation starts at 4 PM in the "Board Room" of the Main Street Landing building
The Board Room is one floor above Skinny Pancake, one entrance farther north.  Enter from Lake Street.

    It just makes sense.

Speak up for More Stripes on Streets

We, the undersigned, call on the City of Burlington to work with Local Motion and other partners to install new bike lanes on at least two major streets that:

    a) are important connections for biking; and
    b) can have bike lanes added without significant changes to vehicle lanes and without any major construction.

We urge the City to add bike lanes to these streets by fall 2016.  We encourage the City to take a "light and fast" approach to adding bike lanes, restriping streets based on in-house engineering knowledge rather than hiring an outside firm to do the design work.

Finally, we call on Mayor Weinberger to allocate the funds needed to pay for extra line grinding and striping costs incurred to create these bike lanes, and to work with city staff to expedite these projects.
