Vermont Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition

The Vermont Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition (VBPC) merged with Local Motion in March 2015. The combined organization draws on the best of VBPC and Local Motion to advocate and educate, statewide.

  • What happened?  Local Motion was approached by the Board of the VBPC in late 2014 when their long-time Executive Director, Nancy Schultz, stepped down.  Both boards agreed that joining forces was the best way to serve bike riders and walkers today, and the best way to help our communities transform into safe and welcoming places for everyone who wants to walk and bike tomorrow.
  • What’s in a name?  Just add an apostrophe! We now refer to Local Motion “Vermont’s Walk-Bike Coalition” in order to signal that we now have a statewide role. We will look at the question of what name will best fit our mission when we craft our next strategic plan over the course of 2016.
  • What has changed?  All of our local and statewide programs and initiatives that you know and love are continuing! Local Motion is and will remain a deeply engaged organization in Chittenden County with a strong commitment to on-the-ground change. We are also working to expand some of our most successful programs statewide. Perhaps you have seen a Bike Smart training at a school near you, as we are now serving more than 30 communities in 8 counties.  Or you may have taken part in our adult Everyday Bicycling classes, which are now offered from St. Johnsbury to Brattleboro.
  • What’s next?  Over the next couple of years, going statewide will mean two things.  First, we are working with partners across Vermont to develop a true statewide coalition of walk and bike advocates. (Visit the Your Community section of our site to learn more.)  And second, we are now very active in the legislature, with the goal of building partnerships to advance an ambitious agenda for making Vermont the most walk- and bike-friendly state in the country.  (Visit our State Legislative Advocacy page to learn more.)
